Call for Papers – Special Issue for The Journal of Economic Inequality
Mobility in Low and Middle-Income Countries

Low and middle-income countries are characterised by both high levels of inequality and strong persistence of socioeconomic status across generations. Yet the extent to which inequality is transmitted intergenerationally in these contexts remains insufficiently understood. A major challenge is the limited availability of data linking parents and children, particularly in the poorest countries. Despite this, recent advances such as greater access to administrative source, newly collected primary data, and survey waves that enable generational linkages have begun to open up promising avenues for research.

In this Special Issue on Mobility in Low and Middle-Income Countries, we welcome contributions that deepen our understanding of the mechanisms through which inequality is reproduced across generations, and that assess the events, institutions, and policies capable of fostering or hindering greater mobility. Together, these studies will help understand whether, and through what channels, policy interventions can promote more equitable and socially mobile societies.
