BLS Consumption Symposium: Broadening Our Understanding of Household Consumption and Measurement

September 22-23, 2021, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. EDT (new date)

This free, BLS-sponsored Consumption Symposium will feature presentations from outside researchers and BLS staff. The symposium will explore how BLS can produce a holistic consumption measure at the “consumer unit” level. A dedicated BLS survey program already tracks what consumers buy, but more data are needed to measure how consumers use nonmonetary resources—namely, their time, durable goods, and in-kind benefits—to meet their needs. The symposium will illuminate the challenges of measuring consumption broadly at the consumer unit level. The symposium also will highlight approaches to overcome those challenges through the integration of different data sources and imputation.

The Call for Presenters for the Consumption Symposium is now open.
